a manhanttan christmas

i was in new york city exactly one year ago for christmas, and it was truly something else. nevermind the single digit temperatures, there was a distinct peacefulness admist all the chaos. snow was falling, people were feeling a bit more friendly, the cafes were warm and smelt of baked goods and hot cocoa. fifth avenue was lit by the ornate window displays, carolers were singing on street corners, you could hear skaters spin, fall, and laugh at rockefeller center. the entire city glittered than usual, in the figurative and literal sense: christmas lights covered every lamppost.

i love these photographs even though it looks bitterly cold. the island looks romantic, reminding me of simpler times in one of the world's most self proclaimed disillusioned metropolises. it's as if december ushers in a temporary childlike innocence. manhattan allows itself to believe in magic for a month. i like it that way.
