(500) Days of Summer

"Tom, the boy, still believes, even in this cynical modern world, in the notion of a transforming, cosmically destined, lightning-strikes-once kind of love. Summer, the girl, doesn't. Not at all. But that doesn't stop Tom from going after her, again and again, like a modern Don Quixote, with all his might and courage. Suddenly, Tom is in love not just with a lovely, witty, intelligent woman - not that he minds any of that - but with the very idea of Summer, the very idea of a love that still has the power to shock the heart and stop the world."
i've been dying to see this movie ever since i heard about, probably because i am a hopeless romantic. the reviews have been stellar and after tonight i'll give you my own.

i may be a little bias because i have an unequivocal girl crush on zooey deschanel, i think she is absolutely darling.

the male lead is the endearingly dorky guy from 10 Things I Hate About You and he looks like a doll too. here's the trailer.

UPDATE: i just came back from the theater and i loved every single thing about this movie. i haven't enjoyed a film like this in a long time. everything from the way the movie was shot back and forth in a series of days, to the wise beyond her years little sister, to deschanel's 1960's inspired wardrobe.
it was quick, smart, and had a witty sense of humor that kept me smiling even at the most heart-wrenching moments. it was a refreshingly realistic take on love, on how one moment, one person can change your life drastically, how you can be intoxicatingly in love with a person you aren't meant to be with after that glimpse of time, & the drastic difference between expectations and reality.
it shows the wonderfully tender moments in a relationship that make your heart sing but doesn't shy away from the bad parts that invariably exist, and doesn't try to tie everything up neatly in a bow with a fairy tale ending. its messy, but so is life & all you can do is keep hope. it was everything i could have asked for, definitely exceeding my high expectations.

and to top it off the soundtrack is simply sublime. it's already on repeat on my playlist.
